Angels in the Desert (30th Anniversary Edition): The Part of Desert Storm They Didn't Televise

When a black soldier defies his white commander, sparks fly in Desert Storm when the truth is revealed: the Black soldier cannot seal a gas mask and he is being deployed to his death.

Summary

Angels in the Desert is a spiritual military memoir that blends the brutal truths of systemic racism with moments of the supernatural, tracing the awakening of a young soldier, SPC Miquiel Banks.

Set against the backdrop of modern military life and the looming threat of war, the story exposes the quiet battles waged behind barracks doors—the struggles of Black soldiers fighting not only foreign enemies but injustice within their own ranks.

At just 19 years old, Banks faces discrimination, medical shaving challenges from keloids, and the relentless search for purpose in a system that was never built for him.
