Story Is The First Technology

I’m going to show these people what you don’t want them to see. I’m going to show them a world without you.

Before tools, before systems, before platforms—there was story.

Story was the first technology humans used to survive experience.

It allowed us to compress meaning, transmit memory, and orient ourselves inside chaos.

This is why story persists even when formats change.

It’s not decoration.

It’s structure.

Screenwriting taught me this in practical terms.

Story only works when it organizes pressure.

Character is not personality—it’s response.

Plot is not sequence—it’s consequence.

The same mechanics govern culture.

Narratives decide what counts.

They determine who is legible.

They shape identity long before we’re aware of it.

That’s why authorship matters.

To tell a story is to take responsibility for meaning.

To abdicate authorship is to live inside someone else’s narrative.

Story isn’t escapism.

It’s orientation.

And until we treat it that way again, we’ll keep mistaking noise for meaning.
