banner - atl hip hop vs trap, what's the difference

Introduction

This blog is going to be short because I can’t believe this is even a THING.

Why do people still argue about this?

If you think Trap is Hip Hop, then I have nothing more to say to you.

Let’s get this over with.

What is ATL Hip Hop?

ATL Hip Hop is a Local Chapter of the Global Movement (of Hip Hop) that spread across the globe starting in the late 60s.

It originated in the early 80s and encompasses 10 Elements, one of which is Music.

What is ATL Hip Hop Music?

ATL Hip Hop Music is a Local Chapter of Southern Hip Hop that captivated the world in the early 90s and culminated with the creation of the greatest Duo in Hip Hop History: Outkast.

What is Trap Music?

Trap Music originated in the A and was created by DJ Toomp and T.I. on his second studio album (Trap Muzik) that was released on August 19 2003.

It was given this name from the “trap,” an ATL term used to neighborhoods where there is one way to get in and one way to get out.

In other words, you are “trapped” once you drive in.

And these neighborhoods are governed and ran by the Dope Boyz and their gritty lifestyles.

The movie, New Jack City, captures this concept perfectly.

What makes them different?

First, this genre has a NEW NAME and it is not following the tradition of Hip Hop.

Next, it was endorsed by the Invaders as a way to “Control Culture” and they latched onto this new genre.

Now, let’s look at the music.

Hip Hop Music often features a combination of sampled melodies, drum breaks, scratching, and elements from Disco, Funk, Soul, R&B, and Jazz.

Trap Music is characterized by a heavy use of 808 sub-bass, prominent hi-hat rolls, synthesizers, dark and atmospheric sounds, with repetitive and energetic beats with a focus on creating a specific mood or vibe.

Now, let’s look at the lyrics.

ATL Hip Hop has a diverse range of lyrical themes and explores social issues, personal experiences, storytelling, the reinforcement of cultural and southern values, and lighter themes like dancing and Yeeking.

Trap music tends to focus on the same topics such as street life, drug culture, wealth, and partying.

Conclusion

ATL Hip Hop is diverse and has an enormous range of topics and styles, while trap music has a particular focus on the street life and a specific sonic aesthetic.
